Canadian Student Visa Guide for Study Abroad
Studying in Canada is a dream for thousands of international students each year. With world-class universities, a multicultural environment, and a strong pathway to future opportunities, it’s no surprise that Canada remains one of the top destinations for education. If you’re planning to study here, one of the first steps is obtaining a Canadian Study Permit (commonly called a student visa).
A student visa allows you to legally live and study in Canada for the duration of your program. To apply, you’ll first need a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). This document confirms your admission and is the cornerstone of your application. You’ll also be required to prove that you have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs. As of 1st of September 2025, the Canadian government typically requires proof of at least CAD $22,895 per year for living costs outside Quebec, in addition to tuition.
Beyond financial proof, you’ll also need to show ties to your home country to reassure immigration officers that you intend to leave after completing your studies, unless you pursue further residency options. Medical exams, biometrics, and police certificates may also be requested, depending on your circumstances.
The benefits of a Canadian student visa go beyond the classroom. As a student, you may be eligible to work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during breaks. This provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Furthermore, after graduation, many students qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which can lead to permanent residency pathways like Express Entry.
