Canada Super Visa Guide for Parents & Grandparents

August 26, 20251 min read

The Canadian Super Visa is a special immigration program designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Unlike a regular visitor visa, which typically allows a six-month stay, the Super Visa lets parents and grandparents stay in Canada for up to five years at a time, with multiple entries for up to 10 years. For families separated by distance, this visa provides an incredible opportunity for long-term visits.

To qualify for a Super Visa, applicants must meet certain requirements. First, you’ll need an official invitation letter from your child or grandchild who lives in Canada. This letter must confirm that they are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, promise financial support during your stay, and include details about their household size. Proof of the child or grandchild’s income is also required to show they meet the minimum income threshold set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Another key requirement is medical insurance. Applicants must purchase Canadian health insurance coverage for at least one year with a minimum coverage of $100,000. This ensures that any healthcare costs during the visit are covered, protecting both the visitor and the Canadian healthcare system.

Applying for a Super Visa also involves undergoing a medical exam and providing biometrics (fingerprints and photographs). Once approved, the visa allows parents and grandparents to enjoy quality time with their families in Canada without the need to frequently renew their status.
